California
Woman Re-Gains Lost Sense Of Smell Thanks To Hot Peppers
by Joyce Claire
Chula Vista, California -- February 24, 2004
These days our busy lives make it tough to
stop and smell the roses, but just imagine if you could never
smell those roses even if you had the time. That's the reality
for more than 2 million Americans who have a condition known
as "Anosmia".
Anosmia sufferers either partially, or completely
lose their sense of smell. For a very few people it's a congenital
disorder starting at birth, but for most it's due to a variety
of sinus ailments. Chronic sinus conditions such as rhinitis,
sinusitis, and even allergies can all lead to anosmia.
According to Dr. Daniel Kurtz of the State
University of New York's Upstate Medical Center, anosmia is
caused by severe nasal inflammation. When the nasal passages
become inflamed, the complicated series of nerves and receptors
are suppressed -- sometimes forever.
"Almost everybody will lose their sense
of smell when they have a cold. That's a given, but there's
also nasal sinus disease, seasonal allergies and polyps which
can cause longer lasting impairment but are usually treatable
with allergy drugs, surgery and anti-inflammatory steroids.
However, there are some cases that are more stubborn. For
example, some people will have a simple cold, but when the
infection goes away the smell never comes back," Kurtz
added.
It's all due to the sensitivity of the nerves
inside the nasal cavity. Unlike other nerves, receptor cells
inside the nose regularly die and regenerate on a regular
cycle that runs every 30 to 60 days. Certain viruses can kill
these cells (known as progenitors), which give rise to the
new nerve receptors. So when the old cells die, there are
no new ones to replace them, and the sense of smell is eventually
lost.
That's exactly what happened to Amelia Anderson
of Chula Vista, California. A chronic sinus sufferer for most
of her adult life, Amelia completely lost her sense of smell
more than a decade ago. Over the years she eventually got
use to not being able to smell, but she always missed the
fragrances of the environment around her. Now after years
of suffering, Amelia can once again stop to smell the roses
thanks to an innovative new nasal spray made with "capsaicin",
a natural hot pepper extract.
"I haven’t been able to smell anything
for about 10 years. We live by the ocean and I could never
smell the air around me. You know that smell the ocean has.
I always missed that. I've taken all kinds of medications
for my sinus problems over the years. I've been on all kinds
of over the counter medicines and even prescriptions from
my doctor, but nothing ever worked until I used that spray.
Now I can smell everything," Anderson said.
She's referring to "The Sinus Buster",
the world's first capsaicin based nasal spray. Capsaicin is
the natural chemical that puts the "Hot" in hot
peppers, and it's been clinically proven to relieve many sinus
conditions including rhinitis. Capsaicin is also touted as
one of the best headache remedies ever discovered -- relieving
migraines, cluster headaches, and even hang-overs.
"When my husband ordered the sinus buster
over the Internet I was skeptical. But I said okay I’d
give it a try. As soon as we got it I used it that night and
the next day I noticed I could smell certain odors. I couldn't
believe it. The first thing I smelled was my daughter coming
home after a night of partying, and I could smell cigarette
smoke all over her. I had to bring her coat out to the garage
because the smoke odor was so strong. Then my daughter told
me that’s how she always smells after going out, but
I never smelled the smoke before," Anderson added.
Representatives for SiCap Industries, the company
that makes The Sinus Buster nasal spray, were more than enthused
about this latest discovery. They claim that as many as 20
customers have reported a partial or full recovery of their
sense of smell after using SiCap's unique pepper nasal spray.
"Sinus Buster is an amazing product that almost
seems too good to be true. When I first got involved in this
company, I didn't realize what I was getting myself into.
I've been selling products all my life, and usually there's
alot of hype in the marketing, but the sinus buster is the
most incredible product I've ever seen. We literally get hundreds
of emails and phone calls from customers who rave about how
the product has changed their lives. It really does stop headaches,
and it relieves many chronic sinus problems. We also have
people who claim the spray has stopped their chronic seasonal
allergies," says Rob Sasso, Director Of Marketing for
SiCap Industries.
In fact, the customer testimonials support
the company's claims. In writing this article, I interviewed
36 Sinus Buster customers chosen from a list provided by SiCap
Industries. The list was of customers who opted to speak with
the media on behalf of the Sinus Buster. None of the customers
were related, and they spanned the country from New York to
California.
The stories were incredible to say the least.
I spoke with many chronic headache sufferers who claimed this
spray works better than any medicine or remedy they've ever
used. The most amazing stories were from people who claimed
the Sinus Buster completely controls their chronic seasonal
allergy symptoms.
The most interesting thing is that every single
customer I spoke with touted the fact that they hadn't had
single sinus infection all winter, which for most of them
was very unusual. In addition, three Sinus Buster users who
suffer from sleep apnea told me they have experienced a noted
decrease in nightly breathing episodes.
"The most interesting aspect about the
sinus buster was my wife’s sleep apnea. When you have
sleep apnea, your breathing stops. On time my wife stopped
breathing for nearly a minute. There I was in suspense waiting
to see if she'd start breathing again. With the sinus buster
her sleep apnea is just not there anymore. She takes it before
she goes to bed and it clears her out so she can breathe easier
all night," says Craig Anderson, husband of Amelia, the
California woman who lost and re-gained her sense of smell
after using the Sinus Buster.
And The Sinus Buster isn't just popular in
America, this innocent looking little bottle is building a
big reputation as a true sinus breakthrough all around the
world. There are several new websites going online throughout
Europe just to fill the overseas demand, and doctors on several
continents are already furiously testing this unique product.
"Just think I started this business in
my mom's basement, and now we're operating our own facility.
I invented this spray to help myself, but now it's helping
people all over the world. This thing has just turned into
a monster. We get media inquiries everyday, and people are
amazed at what this stuff can do. I started using it to control
my cluster headaches and chronic congestion, and it always
worked like a champ. But as more and more people have used
it, we've found the sinus buster relieves a whole host of
things that are sinus related. Nothing is a wonder drug, but
this spray really comes close and the customers are the proof,"
says Wayne Perry, founder of SiCap Industries.
Rob sasso says the growing reputation of the
Sinus Buster may seem over-hyped, but the spray's reputation
for effectiveness is well deserved. "From a marketing
standpoint it's tough because it really does seem too good
to be true. Some people who haven't tried it are understandably
skeptical, but once they do try it they realize how well this
stuff works. And now we’re finding out it may even bring
back a person’s sense of smell. I mean that's just incredible,
but the fact is it's all true. One day the sinus buster will
be a household name and I'm excited to be a part of it,"
Sasso added.
Although the story of Amelia Anderson may sound
like hype, my interview proves it’s fact – not
fiction. Moreover, there have been studies that showed that
natural irritants such as capsaicin and mustard seed oil hold
great promise for re-activating the nerve receptors that control
the sense of smell. So what appears to be a medical miracle
may actually be the miracle of Mother Nature. As for Amelia
Anderson, all that matters is she can now finally stop and
smell the roses.
